Session Four – Genesis 24
7.17.13GENESIS 24
• Abraham sends a servant back to his homeland to get a wife for Isaac.
• We are first introduced to Laban.
• Rebekah becomes Isaac’s wife.GENESIS 25
Abraham dies at the age of 175.
Vs. 11 – “God blessed his son Isaac.”
Vs. 19 – “This is the account of…” – New Section
Vs. 19-23 – Jacob & Esau
Vs. 31 – “Birthright” – “The birthright is emphasized in the Bible because it honored the rights or privileges of the family’s firstborn son. After the father died, or in the father’s absence, the firstborn son assumed the father’s authority and responsibilities. Vs. 1-6– The covenant of Abraham renewed with Isaac.
Vs. 7-22 – Discussion Question: Sound familiar?
Vs. 23-24 – Covenant renewed again.
Vs. 34-35 – “They were a source of grief….”GENESIS 27
Jacob steals Esau’s blessing from Isaac.
Vs. 27-29 – The blessing given to Jacob.
Vs. 36 – “Isn’t he rightly names ‘Jacob’…?”
Vs. 39-40 – The prophecy given to Esau.
Vs. 42 – 46 – The plan to send Jacob away.GENESIS 28
Vs. 1-5 – Jacob goes to Laban in Paddan Aram.
Vs. 10-15 – The covenant renewed with Jacob through a dream.GENESIS 29
Vs. 1-30 – Jacob receives Leah & Rachel as his wives.
Vs. 30 – “…and his (Jacob) for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah…”

Vs. 22-24 – Joseph is born to Rachel.

Vs. 1 – 21 – Jacob was blessed by God and told to return to Isaac in Canaan.
Vs. 39-30– God continues to protect Jacob.
Vs. 48 – 55 – The oath between Laban & Jacob.GENESIS 32
Vs. 1-21 – Jacob freaks out about seeing Esau again.
Vs. 22-32 – Jacob’s name is changed to Israel – “struggle with God”. Discussion Question: What are the implications of Jacob’s name change?GENESIS 33
Jacob meets Esau
Vs. 20 – “El Elohe” – The mighty God of IsraelGENESIS 34
A very difficult story to read!!!
• The chain reaction of sin is so devastating!

Vs. 1-15 – Discussion Question: Why are these verses so important after reading chapter 34?
• Vs. 9-10 – Jacob”s name change…again.
• Vs. 11-13 – The covenant renewed.Vs. 16-20 – The death of Rachel.
Vs. 22 – Just remember this verse for future reference!
Vs. 23-26 – Discussion Question: What is so important about these 12 sons?
Vs. 27-29 – Isaac dies.GENESIS 36
Esau’s descendants are named.
• Vs. 6-8 – Esau & Israel separate because their wealth was too great for one area.
